With their new ruler cementing his grip on power and their stronghold moved further into the Deepmere the gitmob tribes of the Ghoulmere resumed their hunts and raids on the caravans of Greywater. For all the safety their deeper refuge granted the hunting parties found meat increasingly scarce this far from hospitable ground, whilst an intrinsic part of their ancestry Nazzigs council were forced to look beyond the hunt to sustain their recuperating forces. Those grots with a greener thumb began to cultivate swamp weeds and herd the mere-bugs that thrived far from interfering exterminators, though bug meat lacked the rip and tear of freshly caught prey its sustenance could provide what hunting parties more frequently failed to. Whilst unified the Gitmob tribes were far from a major power in the region, they had been decimated in the fall of Skumfenn Sump and Nazzig grew increasingly paranoid it was only a matter of time before the necrotic legions would make a second attempt on him, clawing at the mark their curse had left upon his flesh whilst barking orders.
It was not merely the Legions of Nagash that sought to exploit the power of the mere however, to the north lay the Realms-edge Mountains that formed the natural refuge of grot tribes rumoured to serve more malign masters than many of their ilk. These Undermina Grots had an expansive warren of mines beneath the mountains carving out Realm stone and ores to use in their bizarre experiments. Here they had what Nazzig lacked, the raw materials and experience to arm a legion of Grots in the defence of the Ghoulmere, and he the position and cunning to exploit the trade routes of Greywater to slip their spies past the cities walls.
The Underminas were led not by Grot but an ancient Troggoth tainted by the runoff from the industry of Greywater, his regeneration accelerated beyond his own kinds natural limitations. In times long since passed this Troggoth had seized an accursed axe amongst his treasure horde and this demonically infused weapon drew the dark appetites of the Underminas to him. Nazzig found this potent and yet somewhat dimwitted leader amusing and exploitable, a grot would always seek to usurp him for power yet the Troggoth had become reluctant leader to a rabble he could not escape. Moreover as the Underminas were recovering themselves from a bitter war against the rat-kin in the under-warrens of the Realms-edge Mountains the two tribes of grot found themselves in an accord.
This was perhaps the first time the Ghoulmere found a growing faction beyond a single culture of Grots, no longer mere Gitmob as Nazzig had pushed his followers beyond their ancestral traditions evolving into something new, and with the influx of the malign Underminas they combined factions took their name from the region that now provided refuge, Ghoulmere Grots.
As raw materials flooded into the Deepmere from both raids on Greywater caravans and the mines of the Underminas the forces of the Ghoulmere grew both in size and potency. Lumbering artillery beasts were loaded with blackpowder weapons and stolen Skaven war machines to bring destructive power to bear, the Beast masters of the Gitmob had wrangled much of their menagerie back to their cages and fighting pits from the destruction of Skumfenn Sump. Creatures of the Deepmere themselves seemingly sought out the Kruel King, fell bats drawn to the necrotic energies of the mere made homes in the trees over the grot encampments and their mereshrieker cousins became the mounts of Nazzig royal guard.
The first conflicts of the newly evolved Ghoulmere Grots were against those of their own kind who resisted the power of the Voidskulka, primitive Bog Grots who refused to give up land and tribute to a monarch they neither wanted or needed were hunted down. The poisoned blades of Underminas assassins found the backs of Shamans who had overseen the mere for centuries taking with them the secrets of seemingly endless life for grots, success only stoked hunger for power that drove the Ghoulmere Grots ever onwards against their foe as they battled through the mere culminating in a mighty battle ultimately ended by the intervention of the Sylvaneth guardians of the mere forcing a unity that the Bog Grots had resisted.
In the aftermath of this clash Nazzig claimed the arm of the tree lord guardian of the Ghoulmere “The Pale Oak”, his craftsmen fashioning the branch into a new staff of power for their monarch to stand testament to his success over the treefolk. Wielding this staff and with a growing force now flooding the Deepmere Nazzigs unification of his kingdom had peaked, no grots who stood against him dare raise their head from the bog waters as the Ghoulmere Grots became enforcers of his will and extension of his power.
Whilst the legend of the Voidskulka had drawn them to the Mere as the populace of grots rapidly grew their natural backstabbing instincts could not be reigned in by legend alone. The very same animosity that undermined the defence of Skumfenn Sump began to resonate amongst the gathered tribes and the keen ears of the Monarch of the Mere could hear the mutterings of discontent begin to rise. Rebellion would not only undermine the dream of the Ghoulmere it would be an affront to the ascendant Shaman and his reign over the region, yet seemingly no amount of executions would abate the discontent (though that didn't stop the Kruel King from trying it repeatedly).
Nazzig understood he gathered tribes needed a voice, or at least the pretence of one as to the future of their unified faction. Such a voice would have to appear entirely separate to his rule, to give the pretence of independence but also provide scapegoat should things begin to deteriorate. Unwilling to trust the war chiefs not to seize upon any power they were given to give credibility to an uprising Nazzig summoned to him the elder Morkish shamans of the gathered tribes, not just grot but Orruk, Troggoth more were Brough into the first gathered Council to determine the future of the Mere.
From the hundreds gathered three of the most potent (or gullible) Shamans were select, thrust forth by their companions seemingly aware of the likelihood to take a stray dagger if they disappointed their monarch. These three would be upheld as paragons of Morkiness, discerning the true and cunning path in the shadow of Mork for all grots who resided within the Greater Mere, a region now encompassing the Realmsedge Mines of the Underminas. Since the foundation of the first Council there have been many disputes between the Monarch and their rulings, with many Councillors mysteriously falling to hidden blade in the height of battle after having offered critique of their master in the preceding days. Furthermore Nazzig has raised further Councils of Mork to dispute without dirtying his own hands, muddying the waters of Morkiness whilst claiming no interference in the councils duties to their people.
Rumours of rebellion dimmed with the introduction of Da Council of Mork, representatives having a voice within the mere gave some solace to the gathered tribes. For their own part each council sought out guardian or mount worthy of their glorious rank of privilege within morkish society. Many favoured the enormous City-wrecka Troggoths to bear forth fungal thrones to house the trio to prevent assassins getting too close to interfere with the council work.
Whilst animosity outside of the councils died off, within the councils the bickering and barking at each other typified any of their gatherings. Should two councillors form an accord a resolution could be passed and this promoted a culture of bribes and favour trading to benefit their own agendas. When all three worked in unison their arcane potency in the art of Morkish Magicks were unrivalled save for the Kruel King himself, yet all too often assassinations of one councillor by the other would weaken this unity. Far from annoyed at these killings Nazzig encouraged them, a way of keeping the council in check each death provided opportunity to insert a shaman more loyal to his agenda into whichever council was found one shaman short. This has ensured his uncontested dominion over the Greater Mere and afforded him more time to study the powers lurking at the heart of the Deep Mere, entrusting day to day management over Ghoulmere society to the many gathered Councils.
